COMPANY OVERVIEW
EKI Environment & Water, Inc. (EKI) is an employee-owned, full service, engineering and environmental sciences consulting firm serving private- and public-sector clients throughout the United States.
The DevOps Engineer maintains the cloud environments used to deliver EKI applications, data, dashboards, and modeling services, while supporting the systems used by EKI staff. Reporting to the DevOps Architect, this hands-on role combines cloud operations, infrastructure automation, deployment support, and corporate IT administration. The position works with IT, developers, and technical project teams to keep services secure, reliable, and practical to operate.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to the following:
Cloud Operations & DevOps
- Provision, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Azure and AWS resources that support EKI applications, data, and technical teams.
- Build and maintain repeatable infrastructure configurations using tools such as Terraform and PowerShell, Python, or Bash scripting.
- Work with developers to maintain CI/CD pipelines, application settings, secrets, and separate development, staging, and production environments.
- Support application deployments, investigate failed releases, and document rollback and recovery procedures.
- Monitor availability, performance, capacity, and cloud spending; investigate alerts and implement practical improvements.
- Support reliable delivery of client-facing data services, dashboards, models, and related applications in collaboration with project teams.
Corporate IT & Systems Administration
- Administer and troubleshoot Windows and Linux servers, virtual machines, storage, backups, and related on-premises and cloud services.
- Support Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, device management, endpoint configuration, and user access.
- Handle escalated user support requests and assist with employee onboarding, offboarding, laptops, and standard business applications.
- Apply updates, review backups and recovery procedures, monitor system health, and maintain accurate operational documentation.
- Work with vendors and other IT staff to resolve incidents and coordinate maintenance.
Security & Monitoring
- Implement approved access controls, configuration standards, patching, logging, and security recommendations across cloud and corporate systems.
- Investigate incidents, identify root causes, communicate status, and follow through on corrective actions.
Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
- Work with GIS, modeling, development, and operations teams to understand requirements and resolve operational issues.
- Document systems and procedures so IT colleagues can support and recover services consistently.
- Share knowledge and provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior IT staff on systems administration, cloud operations, and troubleshooting.
EXPECTATIONS AND OUTCOMES
This role is expected to:
- Keep corporate systems and user devices maintained, documented, and supported promptly.
- Make infrastructure changes and deployments repeatable, observable, and recoverable.
- Provide dependable environments and responsive operational support to developers and project teams.
- Identify security, reliability, and cost concerns early and work with the DevOps Architect to address them.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Hands-on experience administering Windows servers, endpoints, identity services, and Microsoft 365; familiarity with Linux administration.
- Practical experience operating Azure and/or AWS workloads, including virtual machines, networking, storage, identity, and monitoring.
- Experience with a CI/CD tool such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab CI, or Jenkins.
- Working knowledge of infrastructure as code, configuration automation, and scripting with PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
- Ability to troubleshoot applications, networks, access issues, and deployment failures across multiple systems.
- Knowledge of backups, patching, endpoint security, and least-privilege access.
- Strong communication, documentation, organization, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize competing requests, and support staff across departments.
- Must have a current valid driver’s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with high-volume workload and frequent short deadlines.
- Must be able to lift up to Light – Up to 25 lbs.
- Must be able to work 10-hour days on occasion.
- Must be able to work remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to communicate with others to exchange information.
- Must be able to assess the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to travel occasionally, possibly overnight for customer meetings and site visits up to 10% of the time
