About the role
The consultant will lead the architecture, design, and implementation of low-level ECU platform software for machine ECUs. They are responsible for troubleshooting complex hardware-software integration issues and optimizing real-time performance and system reliability.
What they look for
Requirements
Candidates must have extensive professional experience in low-level embedded software development and deep knowledge of microcontroller architectures and RTOS. Strong proficiency in C/C++ and hands-on experience with hardware debugging tools are essential for this senior role.
Full description
We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Embedded Software Consultant to take a key technical role in the development of a next-generation software platform for machine ECUs.
The assignment is focused on advanced low-level embedded software and platform development, working close to the MCU, RTOS, and hardware. The consultant is expected to operate with a high degree of independence and contribute not only to implementation but also to technical architecture, platform design decisions, system analysis, and resolution of complex cross-layer problems.
The software platform will be used in machine ECUs with demanding requirements for deterministic real-time behavior, robustness, functional safety, cybersecurity, and long-term maintainability. The role therefore requires a strong understanding of the complete embedded software stack, from MCU startup and hardware abstraction to RTOS behavior, application interfaces, and verification.
Key Responsibilities
- Take a senior technical role in the architecture, design, and implementation of low-level ECU platform software.
- Develop and integrate software close to the MCU, including boot software, startup, device drivers, hardware abstraction, memory handling, and RTOS integration.
- Analyze existing software architectures and determine how they need to evolve when introducing new MCU and RTOS platforms.
- Identify architectural constraints, technical risks, and system-level consequences of design decisions.
- Lead or independently perform complex platform migration and integration activities, including porting software between hardware and/or RTOS environments.
- Analyze and optimize real-time behavior, task scheduling, interrupt handling, execution time, CPU load, and resource utilization.
- Design and implement robust mechanisms for software startup, software update, boot, and recovery.
- Contribute to platform-level cybersecurity, including secure boot, secure software update, and protection of software integrity where applicable.
- Troubleshoot complex problems involving interactions between application software, platform software, RTOS, compiler/toolchain, MCU peripherals, and hardware.
- Perform hands-on debugging and verification on target hardware using debug probes, trace tools, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
- Support architectural and technical decisions related to functional safety and dependable embedded software.
- Provide technical guidance to other developers and contribute to establishing strong engineering practices for the platform.
Required Skills & Experience
- Extensive professional experience in low-level embedded software and ECU platform development, with demonstrated technical ownership of complex embedded systems.
- Deep understanding of microcontroller architectures, including startup, reset behavior, interrupts, timers, memory architecture, peripheral interfaces, and hardware initialization.
- Strong practical experience with ARM Cortex-M or comparable 32-bit MCU architectures.
- Strong experience with RTOS-based and/or bare-metal systems, including scheduling, synchronization, interrupt interaction, and deterministic real-time behavior.
- Proven experience porting or migrating embedded software between MCU, RTOS, or platform environments.
- Strong experience with bootloaders and boot software, including software startup, firmware update, and recovery concepts.
- Ability to work with memory layout, stack/heap usage, linker configuration, and resource constraints in embedded systems.
- Strong experience developing device drivers, HAL/BSP components, and hardware-near platform services.
- Demonstrated ability to independently investigate and resolve difficult hardware/software integration and real-time problems.
- Strong hands-on debugging skills using JTAG/SWD or equivalent debug/trace tools and hardware measurement equipment.
- Advanced programming skills in C and C++, including production-quality software for resource-constrained and real-time embedded targets.
- Experience with Python for engineering tooling, automation, testing, or code generation.
- Ability to quickly understand a complex existing architecture and independently translate architectural requirements and constraints into robust implementations.
- Experience working in environments where reliability, determinism, traceability, and engineering rigor are essential.
Strongly Meritorious
- Experience with NXP S32K or comparable automotive/industrial MCU families.
- Experience performing RTOS/platform migrations in production embedded systems.
- Experience with secure boot, secure firmware update, cryptographic firmware validation, or hardware root-of-trust concepts.
- Knowledge of embedded cybersecurity standards or practices such as IEC 62443 or equivalent.
- Experience within automotive, construction equipment, aerospace, or other safety-critical embedded systems.
- Practical functional-safety experience according to standards such as ISO 26262, IEC 61508, ISO 13849, DO-178C, or equivalent.
- Experience analyzing worst-case execution time, CPU utilization, scheduling, and other real-time performance characteristics.
- Experience with CAN/CAN FD, UDS diagnostics, and ECU software-update mechanisms.
- Experience with modern CI/CD, automated verification, unit testing, and code-quality tooling for embedded software.
- Previous experience as a Technical Lead, Platform Architect, or Senior Technical Contributor while remaining hands-on with implementation.
Expected Level of Contribution
The consultant is expected to become productive quickly in an unfamiliar platform environment and work with limited technical supervision.
The role requires the ability to move between architecture and detailed implementation, understand why the platform is designed as it is, challenge assumptions where necessary, and anticipate the consequences of technical decisions across MCU hardware, RTOS, platform software, and application software.
The successful consultant should be capable of taking ownership of technically challenging platform areas and driving them from analysis and concept through implementation, integration, debugging, and verification.
