Lead DevOps Engineer – Workspace

Role summary

We are looking for an experienced Lead DevOps Engineer to join the engineering organisation supporting LSEG Workspace, one of LSEG’s key platforms for delivering financial data, analytics, news, and workflow capabilities to customers globally.

This is a technical leadership role with responsibility for shaping and evolving the DevOps practices, cloud infrastructure, deployment platforms, and operational capabilities that underpin Workspace services. You will work closely with software engineering, architecture, security, QA, SRE and product teams to ensure that applications can be built, deployed and operated reliably, securely and efficiently at scale.

The successful candidate will combine strong hands-on engineering expertise with technical leadership. You will help define engineering standards, influence architectural decisions, drive automation and operational excellence, and mentor engineers across the team.

The role will have a strong focus on cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, scalability, resiliency and cost optimisation.

The role may include participation in an on-call rota to support production services during agreed support hours. Occasional weekend work may also be required to support major releases, infrastructure changes or production activities.

What you’ll be doing

• Provide technical leadership for DevOps, cloud infrastructure and platform engineering practices supporting LSEG Workspace.
• Design, build and continuously improve highly available, scalable and resilient cloud infrastructure and deployment platforms.
• Lead the design and management of container orchestration platforms using Kubernetes, including workload scheduling, autoscaling, resource management, resiliency and lifecycle management.
• Define and improve containerisation standards and practices using technologies such as Docker.
• Design and maintain infrastructure-as-code solutions using technologies such as Terraform, ensuring infrastructure is reproducible, secure and maintainable.
• Develop and evolve CI/CD pipelines that enable engineering teams to deliver software safely, frequently and consistently across multiple environments.
• Drive automation across provisioning, deployments, configuration management, environment management and operational processes.
• Establish and promote engineering standards for scalability, availability, disaster recovery, resiliency and production readiness.
• Work with engineering teams to improve application and infrastructure observability, including logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards and alerting.
• Lead initiatives to improve platform reliability, performance, operational efficiency and cloud cost optimisation.
• Identify architectural and operational risks and work with engineering teams to implement appropriate technical solutions.
• Integrate security best practices throughout the software delivery lifecycle, working closely with security teams to ensure infrastructure and deployment processes meet LSEG security standards.
• Support and lead investigation of complex production incidents, helping teams identify root causes and implement long-term preventative improvements.
• Collaborate closely with software engineers, architects, QA, security, SRE and other engineering teams to improve the overall developer and production experience.
• Mentor and support DevOps and software engineers, promoting strong engineering practices and encouraging knowledge sharing across teams.
• Evaluate emerging technologies, tools and engineering practices and determine where they can provide meaningful improvements to Workspace.

What you’ll bring

• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• Significant professional experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, Platform Engineering or Cloud Infrastructure Engineering.
• Proven experience operating and supporting large-scale, business-critical production systems.
• Strong hands-on experience with a major cloud platform, preferably AWS and/or Azure.
• Deep knowledge of Kubernetes, including production operation, scaling, resource management, networking and workload lifecycle management.
• Strong experience with Docker and container-based application architectures.
• Strong experience with Terraform or comparable infrastructure-as-code technologies.
• Extensive experience designing and maintaining modern CI/CD pipelines and software delivery automation.
• Strong understanding of cloud networking, identity and access management, infrastructure security and secrets management.
• Deep understanding of cloud architecture patterns covering scalability, high availability, fault tolerance, resiliency and disaster recovery.
• Experience implementing observability solutions using metrics, logging, tracing and monitoring platforms.
• Strong understanding of production operations, incident management, root cause analysis and reliability engineering practices.
• Experience identifying and addressing infrastructure performance and cloud cost optimisation opportunities.
• Ability to analyse complex technical problems, anticipate infrastructure challenges and design pragmatic, scalable solutions.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical decisions across multiple engineering teams and stakeholders.
• Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers and defining engineering standards.
• A strong interest in emerging technologies and continuous improvement of engineering practices.

Desirable experience

• Experience supporting large-scale desktop, web or distributed application platforms.
• Experience with Amazon EKS, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) or similar managed Kubernetes platforms.
• Experience with Kubernetes autoscaling technologies such as Cluster Autoscaler, Karpenter or Horizontal Pod Autoscaler.
• Experience with modern observability platforms and technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Splunk or equivalent.
• Experience working with large distributed systems and microservice architectures.
• Experience operating platforms within a highly regulated or financial-services environment.
• Familiarity with FinOps practices and cloud cost management.
• Experience improving developer platforms, developer experience and self-service infrastructure capabilities.
