Full description

We are looking for a Data Engineering Manager to lead Sky’s Data Engineering capability and help shape the future of enterprise data solutions. This role combines people leadership with deep subject-matter expertise, setting the direction, governance, standards and frameworks that enable secure, scalable, reliable and well-managed data products and platforms.

As the people leader for Data Engineering, you’ll create the conditions for engineers to thrive, set clear priorities and expectations, and build an inclusive, accountable and high-performing team. You’ll coach and develop capability, support performance and career growth, plan for future skills, and foster consistent engineering practices and strong collaboration.

As Sky’s Data Engineering subject-matter expert, you’ll provide technical authority across enterprise data solutions and translate strategy into pragmatic delivery. You’ll define and embed governance, architecture guardrails, engineering standards, reusable patterns and delivery frameworks across the data lifecycle. Working alongside the Analytics Engineering and Business Intelligence teams, as well as Product, Technology and business stakeholders, you’ll ensure data solutions are interoperable, trusted, secure, cost-effective and aligned to Sky’s enterprise data direction.

  • Lead an inclusive, high-performing Data Engineering team, setting clear purpose, priorities, expectations and accountability while coaching and developing engineers through feedback, career development and succession planning.
  • Shape the Data Engineering operating model, workforce plan and allocation of capability so the team has the skills and focus to deliver Sky’s highest-value priorities.
  • Act as the subject-matter expert and technical authority for enterprise data engineering, guiding solution design, platform choices, integration, data modelling, ingestion and operational practices.
  • Set and embed enterprise data engineering governance, standards, frameworks, reusable patterns and guardrails covering security, privacy, quality, lineage, metadata, access, retention and regulatory compliance.
  • Establish consistent engineering practices for CI/CD, automated testing, observability, deployment, documentation, incident management and change control.
  • Lead the design, delivery and evolution of scalable, secure and resilient enterprise data platforms and pipelines, owning reliability, performance and cost through monitoring, optimisation, capacity planning and root-cause prevention.
  • Partner closely with Analytics Engineering and Business Intelligence to align roadmaps and accountabilities and deliver trusted, fit-for-purpose data products for analytics and reporting.
  • Build strong relationships across Product, Technology, Architecture, Security and the business, translating strategic needs into practical enterprise data solutions and measurable outcomes.

We’re looking for an experienced people leader and credible data engineering practitioner who can grow a strong team, set enterprise direction and lift the maturity of Sky’s data engineering capability. You’ll combine strategic judgement with enough technical depth to guide decisions, challenge constructively and enable effective delivery alongside Analytics Engineering and Business Intelligence.

What you bring to this role:

  • People leadership experience building inclusive, high-performing data or engineering teams, with a strong coaching mindset and success leading performance, development, career pathways, talent and succession.
  • Significant experience delivering and operating enterprise data platforms and data engineering solutions in complex digital and technology environments.
  • Deep subject-matter expertise and hands-on experience with modern data platforms and tooling, including Snowflake, AWS, dbt, NiFi/OpenFlow or similar ingestion frameworks, and advanced SQL and Python, supported by strong knowledge of data integration, data modelling, ELT/ETL, platform operations and software engineering practices for data.
  • Proven experience defining and implementing enterprise data governance, engineering standards, frameworks, reusable patterns and controls, including reliability, observability, performance, cost management, CI/CD, testing and operational risk.
  • Proven experience leading delivery with external partners, establishing clear accountabilities and ensuring data engineering solutions meet business, technical, security and quality requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with Analytics Engineering, Business Intelligence and Business Partnering teams to align roadmaps and accountabilities, and enable trusted data products and insight delivery.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills, with the credibility to advise senior leaders, challenge constructively and balance enterprise consistency with pragmatic delivery.
