Full description
Job Summary
The Business Intelligence Architect is the primary builder of the organization's Power BI reporting. The underlying data tables are built and maintained by IT and data engineering. This role writes SQL queries to pull the right information from those existing tables, brings it into Power BI, and turns it into dashboards and reports that leaders use to make decisions. Working with minimal guidance, the analyst owns BI work from the first business conversation through the finished, published product. Success in this role takes deep technical skills in Power BI and SQL, sound analytical judgment, and a working understanding of how the business operates. The analyst serves as the go-to BI resource who can explain complex data in plain terms to non-technical audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Power BI Development
Design, build, publish, and maintain Power BI dashboards, reports, and visualizations from start to finish
Connect Power BI to existing data tables and set up the relationships, calculated columns, and report calculations and KPI formulas each report needs
Use Power Query to shape and clean data inside Power BI so it is ready for reporting
Manage Power BI workspaces, scheduled refreshes, gateways, and user access
Tune reports so they load quickly and stay accurate as data volume grows
Build and support paginated reports in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) where a formatted, printable report is needed
Query Writing and Data Accuracy
Write, test, and maintain SQL queries that pull data from existing tables in SQL Server and other source systems
Know where data lives across company systems and which tables to use for each business question
Join, filter, and summarize data from multiple tables to answer business questions accurately
Validate report results against source data to confirm accuracy before release
Business Partnership and Analysis
Act as the bridge between technical teams (data engineers, IT) and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex data into clear business terms
Meet with business partners to identify and document reporting and analytics needs, decide whether a request is workable, and agree on a solution and timeline
Partner with IT and data engineering on new table or field requests, and help find and resolve data quality issues
Build working knowledge of business operations across several parts of the organization so BI work supports company goals
Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), identify trends, and point out opportunities for improvement
Solve complex reporting and data problems, and generate recommendations and solutions as business needs change
Present findings, project progress, and challenges to senior leadership, including information that is difficult or sensitive
Project Ownership and Development of Others
Lead BI projects from intake through delivery with minimal guidance, managing several projects at once and meeting deadlines
Track work, changes, and releases in Azure DevOps
Develop and lead training on Power BI and other data analysis tools for report users and colleagues
Serve as a resource and mentor for colleagues with less BI experience
Control costs related to own projects, including tool licensing and time spent on report development
Work Environment
Office-based or hybrid, depending on location and team structure
Collaborative environment with frequent cross-departmental communication and extended computer work
Schedule
Monday–Friday, standard business hours
Flexibility required for project deadlines, report releases, or data issues outside normal hours
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Engineering, or related field, or a suitable combination of education, experience, training, and/or military equivalent
4+ years of experience in Business Intelligence analysis or development
3+ years of hands-on experience building and publishing Power BI dashboards and reports
Advanced SQL query skills, including joins, subqueries, and aggregations against large relational databases
Experience with DAX, Power Query, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and Azure DevOps
Experience with other data visualization tools (such as Tableau or Excel) preferred
Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst certification (PL-300) preferred
Experience in transportation, logistics, or supply chain preferred
Strong analytical judgment, communication, and project management skills, with the ability to explain complex data to non-technical audience.
