Full description

Help shape the future of structural design at BWB.

Can you turn complex calculations and spreadsheet workflows into powerful, reliable software? Would you like to see your Python expertise make a tangible difference to how engineering projects are designed and delivered?

About BWB

At BWB Consulting, we’re more than engineers – we’re trusted partners, innovators, and problem-solvers. Recognised as ACE Best Large Consultancy of the Year and proudly accredited with Investors in People and Investors in Wellbeing, our award-winning culture is built on excellence, collaboration, and sustainability. We push boundaries to deliver exceptional results for our clients – and create meaningful impact for the communities we serve.

The opportunity

We’re looking for a Senior Python Developer to lead the development of the optimisation and automation engine behind our warehouse design workflow.

Reporting to our Digital Innovation Lead, you’ll work closely with structural engineers and tender teams to transform engineering requirements, design rules and existing Excel processes into practical software. Your work will help us explore design options more efficiently, reduce tender production times and maintain the accuracy and technical rigour our projects demand.

This is a hands-on development role with scope to influence both the software and how it is used. You’ll take ownership from understanding the challenge and shaping the solution through to testing, implementation and ongoing improvement.

What you’ll be doing

  • Building the core engine: Design, develop and maintain Python software supporting warehouse design optimisation and tender production.
  • Turning engineering logic into software: Translate calculations, design rules and project constraints into clear, reusable and configurable code.
  • Making design options easier to assess: Develop routines that generate and compare options against agreed engineering and commercial criteria.
  • Connecting data and workflows: Build robust data processing tools and integrate them with existing Excel workbooks, calculation templates and tender processes.
  • Producing dependable outputs: Automate schedules, summaries and reports, maintaining traceability between source data, assumptions and results.
  • Working alongside users: Collaborate with engineers and tender teams to prioritise improvements, test solutions and support adoption.
  • Delivering measurable improvements: Establish current production times and track how automation improves efficiency and consistency.
  • Building quality into every release: Apply appropriate testing, version control and documentation, working with engineers to validate outputs and clearly explain assumptions and limitations.

What you’ll bring

You’ll be an experienced Python developer who enjoys understanding complex technical problems and turning them into useful, maintainable solutions.

We’re looking for:

  • Advanced Python programming skills, with experience developing and maintaining software used in a business environment.
  • Strong data processing skills, including libraries such as pandas and NumPy.
  • Experience integrating Python with Excel, using tools such as openpyxl, xlwings or equivalent.
  • A track record of automating complex spreadsheet-based or technical workflows.
  • Experience of optimisation methods, numerical problem-solving or rules-based option appraisal.
  • A sound approach to software testing, debugging, Git version control and technical documentation.
  • The communication skills to understand engineering requirements and explain software solutions clearly.
  • The initiative to manage your priorities, solve problems and deliver measurable improvements.

Why join BWB?

You’ll work where software development meets engineering, tackling practical challenges alongside the people who will use the tools you create.

Your work will give our teams more capacity to assess design options, apply their expertise and produce high-quality tenders. You’ll have the opportunity to shape an important capability, influence how automation supports structural design and see the results of your work in everyday use.
