Focus Group is a £300m-revenue, 1,500-person technology services company backed by Hg Capital. Following our $1bn valuation in 2024, we’re scaling rapidly and investing in AI (artificial intelligence) to transform how we operate and how we serve our 30,000 SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) customers. As we continue to expand our portfolio and scale our operations, we’re committed to setting new industry standards in managed service excellence. Our growth and strategic acquisitions position us as a company ready to redefine what world-class technical support means in today’s fast-moving technology landscape.

As an IT Solutions Engineer, you’ll be a subject matter expert with networking as your main strength. You’ll provide remote and onsite support, infrastructure deployments and technical advice for valued customers, from small and medium-sized businesses through to large enterprises. You’ll lead network projects from start to finish, act as the go-to person for complex faults, and help the engineers around you grow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure and maintain valued customers’ IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, cloud services and end-user devices.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex technical faults in your area of specialism.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced infrastructure issues across Windows Server, virtualisation (running several virtual servers on one machine), networking and cloud platforms.
  • Design, implement and migrate enterprise network solutions, including LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network) set-ups, SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network, which manages connections between sites through software), VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks, which split a network into separate sections), firewalls and secure wireless. You’ll work across vendors such as Meraki, Aruba, Cisco, SonicWall and Ubiquiti.
  • Lead the delivery of IT projects with a main focus on networking, including network refreshes, LAN, WAN and SD-WAN rollouts, and firewall and wireless deployments. You’ll also contribute to cloud migrations, infrastructure deployments and security work.
  • Manage technical workstreams within larger programmes. You’ll typically own the network workstream, working with project managers, consultants and third-party vendors.
  • Join valued customer calls to contribute to technical scoping (agreeing what a project will involve), solution design and implementation planning.
  • Carry out and document site surveys, technical audits and readiness assessments.
  • Support new valued customer onboarding and technology transitions, making sure handover to our service teams is smooth.
  • Audit and document valued customers’ infrastructure to a high standard, keeping accurate configuration records.
  • Create and maintain best-practice documentation, knowledge base articles and technical runbooks (step-by-step guides for routine tasks) for your specialist area.
  • Provide detailed solution designs and technical proposals that meet valued customers’ needs.
  • Mentor and support other engineers on complex project deliveries and technical escalations.
  • Keep up to date with industry developments, emerging technologies and vendor certifications relevant to your specialism.
  • Work closely with our account management, pre-sales and service teams to give valued customers a seamless experience.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • Proven experience in an IT support, infrastructure or solutions delivery role.
  • Demonstrable expertise in networking, including VLANs, routing and switching, firewalls, WAN and SD-WAN, and wireless design and deployment using Meraki, Aruba, Cisco, SonicWall or Ubiquiti.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • A strong troubleshooting approach and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and high documentation standards.
  • Punctual and responsible, with excellent time management.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a project team.
  • Flexibility to adjust your working hours or travel to suit project needs.
  • A full, valid UK driving licence.
  • A strong desire to grow your technical knowledge and achieve industry certifications.

Desirable

  • Experience working in an MSP (Managed Service Provider) environment, where a company looks after other businesses’ IT on an ongoing basis.
  • Relevant Microsoft certifications, for example AZ-104, AZ-140, MS-102, AZ-500 or AZ-305.
  • Vendor certifications in networking (Meraki, Cisco or Aruba) or security platforms.
  • Experience with scripting and automation, such as PowerShell or Azure Automation (tools that automate repeat technical tasks).
  • Familiarity with ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library, a widely used set of IT service management practices) and service management principles.
  • Experience with IT documentation platforms such as IT Glue, Hudu or similar.
