Product Designer I

The Role

You will own design for a set of products, working with product management and engineering to build a clear view of who the users are and what they need, then turn that into software that makes complicated work feel manageable.

Our users are engineers and operators using industrial software. The data is dense, the workflows are long, and the consequences of a bad interface are real. Good design here is less about surface polish and more about judgment: knowing what to show, what to hide, and what to let the software decide.

You will join a global product design team. We work in ten-week program increments alongside product and development teams.

Your Impact

• Own design for your products end-to-end, from framing the problem through supporting the build 

• Build real knowledge of the domain and of the people doing the work 

• Partner with product management and engineering inside SAFe program increments, staying far enough ahead that design does not become the bottleneck 

• Create flows and prototypes, and stay close to software developers through implementation so what ships matches what was intended 

• Generate evidence rather than argue from opinion, through usability sessions, validation studies and customer conversations 

• Use the Emerson Design System and contribute back to it 

• Work with AI generated interfaces: direct them, review them against our patterns and accessibility standards, and correct what they get wrong 

• Collaborate across time zones, with some care for the people on the other end of the calendar 

What You'll Need

• A portfolio showing several projects end to end, with your reasoning visible and not just the final screens 

• 2+ years designing web products, with a track record of leading self-contained projects independently 

• Professional fluency with Figma 

• Systems thinking: the ability to see a shared pattern and extend it rather than invent a one off 

• Working fluency with AI tools in your own workflow, and the judgment to tell when the output is wrong 

• Comfort with technical subject matter, and a willingness to ask engineers direct questions 

• Clear written and verbal communication, including with colleagues who are not native English speakers 

• A degree in human centered design, human computer interaction, computer science, psychology or a related field, or equivalent practical experience 

Helpful, not required 

• Enterprise, industrial or scientific software experience 
• Designing for data dense interfaces: large tables, charts, diagrams, real time monitoring 
• Accessibility practice beyond the basics 
• Experience working on a distributed team

The salary range for this role is $81,800.00 - $102,300.00. This range represents what we in good faith believe is the range possible for base compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range based on several factors. This range may be modified in the future. This role is also eligible for bonus or variable incentive pay. Additionally, we offer a comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, charitable giveback day, medical/dental/vision insurance, and retirement benefits to eligible employees.
